US Falls Out of Innovation Index Top Ten

Bloomberg has just released their 2018 Innovation Index and the United States has fallen out of the Top Ten for the first time since they have been tracking this index. The top five economies are South Korea, Sweden, Singapore, Germany and Switzerland.

The index measures economies based on R&D Intensity, Manufacturing Value-Added, Productivity, High-Tech Density, Advanced Degrees in Science and Engineering, Researcher Concentration and Patent Activity.

The United States fall in this years survey is center around lower scores in college education in science and engineering and researcher concentration.  These two categories go hand in hand as engineering programs in universities are the foundation of researcher concentration.  Worrying to experts is that this trend in science and engineering education is not predicted to improve in coming years and could reduce our standing in future years.
